Our Story

Bryant Cruse graduated from St. John’s College, known for its unique “Great Books” program, providing him with fertile ground for a life-long exploration of how humans know what they know (epistemology). After graduation, he served on active duty as a Naval Aviator, and then went on to earn a graduate degree in Space Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins.

At Lockheed, he developed the first application of AI technology for spacecraft operations for the Hubble Telescope and was funded by NASA for a residency in AI (MS equivalent) at the Lockheed AI center. He then went on to found two successful high-tech software automation companies which were acquired by public corporations. New Sapience, founded in 2015, is his third technology company.

Bryant Cruse

New Sapience has built a team of entrepreneurs, engineers, rocket scientists, and visionaries with expertise spanning a variety of disciplines, all working together to build sustainable and practical Synthetic Intelligence.

When Karsten Huneycutt (Chief Software Architect) first met Bryant, he had no clue they would soon partner and work together for the next 20 years. They started talking about language, computer understanding of language and world models; things that eventually became New Sapience. A moment of serendipity brought two incredible minds together to create a breakthrough technology.

When Bill Bandy left DARPA in 1990, he was back at the NSA working on his computer, and it dawned on him, “Wait a minute, I still can’t tell this thing what I want it to do for me, have it actually understand really what I want to do and have it go off and do it.”

30 years later, he was introduced to Bryant Cruse by their lawyer, who thought Bill would be interested in what Bryant was doing. Bryant explained to Bill his very unique approach to AI, which he instantly had this gut reaction, “This is the guy that’s going to make it happen. He’s the one that’s going to deliver on something.”

No one sees New Sapience coming… this is the classic definition of what a disruptive technology is.
